A warm smile, a delicious meal, and a heart full of love are just a few things students can count on when they walk into the cafeteria at Martin L. Nesbitt, Jr. Discovery Academy (NDA). Behind it all is Child Nutrition Manager Serena Hanson, who makes sure every student starts their day fueled and ready to learn.
For the past five years, Ms. Hanson has been a valued member of the Buncombe County Schools family. Her dedication goes far beyond preparing breakfast and lunch. She takes pride in creating a welcoming environment where students feel cared for, supported, and excited to visit the cafeteria each day.
Whether she’s preparing meals, serving students, or greeting them with her contagious smile, Ms. Hanson pours her heart into everything she does. She understands that nutritious meals are an important part of a student’s success.
“I love that I get to know each of the kids,” said Ms. Hanson. “They come in with a smile on their face knowing that they can get free lunch and breakfast.”
Principal Tara Lawther recognizes the important role Ms. Hanson plays in making NDA a special place for students and staff.
“Serena brings something special to our school,” Ms. Lawther said. “She takes tremendous pride in her work. You can see it in the care she gives to every part of her cafeteria. She usually has 90s music playing, and she has created an environment that just feels happy and welcoming.”
National School Lunch Week is an opportunity to celebrate the hardworking Child Nutrition professionals who do so much more than serve meals. They build relationships, brighten a students’ day, and help ensure every child has access to the nutrition they need to succeed.
