Cassie Whitaker behind the steering wheel of a school bus.

For Fairview Elementary bus driver Cassie Whitaker, her job is about much more than getting students from one place to another. It’s about making sure every child who steps onto her bus feels safe, welcomed, and cared for.

Ms. Whitaker has served the Fairview Elementary community in several roles including bus driver, custodian, and child nutritionist. No matter what the need, she is always there.

“Cassie is always willing to help wherever she is needed, from driving extra routes to organizing routes in the summer,” said Assistant Principal Misty Brooks. “She is kind, caring, and loving towards her students and makes them feel safe and cared for each day.”

Cassie is always going the extra mile for her students and the staff of Fairview Elementary. The students are at the heart of everything she does.

“Seeing the kids’ faces light up is why I love my job,” Ms. Whitaker said. “Seeing them and being there for them means everything to me.”

Her dedication is especially meaningful as Buncombe County Schools celebrates Bus Ridership Week. The week highlights the importance of school transportation, and is the official count of students who ride the bus. Bus ridership plays an important role in determining annual transportation funding.

Across Buncombe County Schools, bus drivers like Ms. Whitaker are prepared to navigate the roads and make sure students arrive safely at school and return home each afternoon. Families are encouraged to have their children ride the bus this week and help celebrate the important role school transportation plays in our community.

Thank you to all of our amazing BCS bus drivers for going the extra mile for our students every day!
