As BCS Superintendent Dr. Rob Jackson prepares for his final day on the job, he made a special visit to where his career in education began. 

Students and staff at Bell Elementary lined the halls for a “clap out,” a tradition at the school for 5th graders when they leave for middle school, and for staff members when they retire. Dr. Jackson started at Bell 34 years ago as a school secretary and summer custodian. 

“Once a Bell Bear, always a Bell Bear,” said principal Danny Fusco. “We thought it was a very fitting way to honor him for his years of service and leadership.”

The procession ended in the kindergarten class of BCS Teacher of the Year Anna Kearney. Lisa Thomas of children’s book publisher Scholastic surprised the superintendent with a donation of books, the “Dr. Rob Jackson Leadership Collection.” Scholastic is also donating to Glen Arden and Sand Hill-Venable elementary schools, the other two BCS schools he served early in his career. 

“I can’t think of a better gift than sharing the magic of reading with our students,” said Dr. Jackson. “I am so grateful for this amazing sendoff.”

Last week, the Buncombe County Schools Foundation launched the Dr. Rob Jackson Elevate the Future scholarship. It will help BCS teammates, such as clerical, custodial, and nutrition staffers, who want to become licensed teachers. Contributions can be made at this link. 

Dr. Jackson’s final day on the job will be Monday, Aug. 31.
