What do you want to be when you grow up? At Hominy Valley Elementary, Career Day gave students a chance to discover that the answer doesn’t have to be just one thing.

Instead of simply learning about different jobs, students spent the day imagining where their own interest, talents, and favorite subjects could one day take them. Community members representing a variety of careers visited the school to share a glimpse into their working worlds and answer plenty of questions along the way.

For students, the day was about making connections. A favorite subject in the classroom could become the beginning of a future career. A hobby they already love could someday be a profession. Even a career they had never heard of before could suddenly become a new dream.

Career Day also gave students an important look at the many different paths people take to reach their goals. Visitors shared their experiences, explained what their jobs are really like, and helped students understand that building a future starts with learning, exploring, and being willing to try new things.

By the end of the day, Hominy Valley students walked away with more than a list of possible careers. They left with new questions, new ideas, and perhaps even a new answer to that familiar question: “What do you want to be when you grow up?”
