📚🌎❤️ First grade Dual Language students at West Buncombe Elementary marked the end of the school year with a joyful celebration showcasing everything they learned together.
Families enjoyed a reading from the class book “Amigos del Corazón,” a performance of “Sleeping Beauty,” a dance presentation, and an awards and diploma ceremony. Throughout the program, students demonstrated their growth in both English and Spanish while celebrating academic achievement, teamwork, creativity, and confidence. The event also served as a heartfelt farewell to their teacher, Laura Rojas, who is returning to her home country of Colombia after five years with Buncombe County Schools.
“This celebration was about much more than finishing first grade,” Ms. Rojas said. “It was an opportunity for our students to share how much they've grown academically, socially, and emotionally while building confidence and learning to work together. Watching our students read, perform, and communicate in both English and Spanish was a wonderful reminder of the power of Dual Language education. Their families were able to see firsthand the incredible progress they've made this year.”
It was a bittersweet moment for Ms. Rojas, but she said she feels proud of her students’ progress, and she will treasure the relationships she has built here.
“It has been an honor to be part of these students’ journeys,” she said.
