Superintendent's Comments
Good evening Parents, Members of the Community, Board Members, and Teammates,

It is hard to believe that another school year is rapidly drawing to a close. As we approach our final three and a half days with students, we do so with grateful hearts, thankful for the opportunity to serve the children, families, and communities of Buncombe County.

Tonight is a night of celebration. Throughout this meeting, we will recognize students for outstanding academic, artistic, and athletic accomplishments. We will also honor exceptional staff members whose dedication and commitment help make those accomplishments possible. My wife, Rene’ and I have loved attending musicals, concerts, and art shows and traveling across the state to cheer on our BCS student-athletes. I have enjoyed every visit into classrooms and have been so impressed by our students and teachers. As we reflect on another successful school year, I am reminded that the achievements of our students are made possible through the unwavering support of parents and families and through the extraordinary efforts of the educators and staff members who serve them each day.

This is also one of the most special times of the year in public education, graduation season. Last Friday evening, we celebrated the graduates of our Progressive Education Program. Last night, we honored the Class of 2026 at Buncombe County Early College and the Buncombe County Center for Career Innovation. Next week, we will gather with families, loved ones, educators, and community members across our nine comprehensive high schools to celebrate graduation ceremonies and the remarkable accomplishments of our students.

Graduation is more than a ceremony. It is the culmination of years of learning, growth, perseverance, and support. It represents countless lessons learned, challenges overcome, friendships formed, and dreams pursued. It is a moment when entire communities come together to celebrate what our students have achieved and all that lies ahead for them. We are incredibly proud of each graduate and grateful for the families who have walked beside them throughout their journey.

I also want to recognize the many individuals whose contributions have helped make this moment possible. To our instructional assistants, bus drivers, child nutrition professionals, custodians, office support staff, teachers, school counselors, school social workers, instructional support teams, administrators, and every member of the Buncombe County Schools family—thank you. You have encouraged, challenged, supported, guided, and cared for these students throughout their educational journey. Every diploma awarded next week reflects not only the hard work of a student, but also the collective efforts of countless adults who chose to invest their time, talents, and hearts in the lives of children. With every name that is called and every handshake that is exchanged, I celebrate you and thank you for the difference you make.

To our graduates, as you prepare for the grand adventure that awaits beyond that stage, step forward with confidence. You are prepared for the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead because you do not go alone. You carry with you the support of your families, your teachers, your schools, and an entire community that believes in you. Years from now, when you return home and encounter a former teacher, a bus driver, a custodian, or the smiling face that served you lunch in elementary school, you will find that they still care deeply about you and will still be cheering for your success. Such is the power of public education and the relationships that are built within it.

We are incredibly proud of the Class of 2026. With you go our hopes, our dreams, and the life’s work of countless educators who have dedicated themselves to helping you become the person you are today. We cannot wait to see the impact you will make on the world.

Finally, to our Board of Education and to every member of the Buncombe County Schools team, thank you for your leadership, your support, and your unwavering commitment to our students. Together, we have made this a truly remarkable school year, and I am deeply grateful for all that you do.

Mister Chair, this concludes my comments.
