Students from across Buncombe County Schools recently gathered for a special day of connection and recognition during the district’s annual Career Readiness Celebration.
The long-running tradition brought students together for a fun-filled event featuring music, games, face painting, yard games, cotton candy, lunch, and opportunities to socialize with peers from schools across the county. Student leadership groups from several BCS high schools volunteered throughout the event, helping create a welcoming and celebratory atmosphere for graduating seniors.
“This is an event for the students who are graduating from Buncombe County Schools in the Career Readiness program,” said Katrina Johnson, lead job coach for Buncombe County Schools. “It’s just a day to celebrate all their accomplishments and the hard work they’ve done.”
The celebration has become a meaningful tradition within the district and has now been held for more than 20 years. Community partners and volunteers help make the event possible each year, including donations of food and activities for students.
“This is important because it brings all of our kids together,” Johnson said. “They get a day where they are celebrated and get to say, ‘look, I’ve made it. This is important.’”
Student volunteers said the event was equally meaningful for them.
“It’s good to celebrate their accomplishments,” said Enka High senior William Parham. “They’ve worked hard just like other seniors. It’s a journey for everybody.”
As music played and students gathered around picnic tables, games, and activities, the day served as a reminder that every graduate deserves to be celebrated for their hard work and achievements.
