A special surprise squad popped into Donalyn Small’s classroom at W.D. Williams Elementary to share the news that she is the BCS Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) Specialist of the Year. Her students erupted in cheers and applause after Superintendent Dr. Rob Jackson made the announcement.

“I’m so honored and surprised,” said Ms. Small. “Being with these kids is not even like coming to work. The energy and attitude about everything we do is amazing.”

Ms. Small serves students at both W.D. Williams Elementary and Owen Middle School. Principals Christy Jones and Bradley McMahan joined the celebration, along with BCS Director of Secondary Education Dr. Donna Lanahan, BCS Director of Elementary/Intermediate Education Monica Ponder, BCS Lead AIG Specialist Leanne Luttrell, 2025 AIG Specialist of the Year Carol Moore, and Ms. Small’s husband, Mark.

Member of the Surprise Squad gather around Ms. Small. BCS AIG programs help advanced learners grow through deeper instruction and enrichment activities that utilize problem solving and critical thinking skills. Nominations for Specialist of the Year come from colleagues who share how a teacher inspires students and leads in their school. Nominees then submit a portfolio for review.

Congratulations, Ms. Small!
