Students in the engineering program at A.C. Reynolds High School are proving that innovation can also be an act of kindness. This spring, students unveiled a new outdoor community food pantry designed to provide easy, anonymous access to food for families in need throughout the Reynolds community.
Modeled after the “Little Free Library” concept seen in neighborhoods across the country, the pantry operates on a simple idea: take what you need, leave what you can, and ask no questions. Students said they wanted to create something meaningful that could directly support neighbors facing food insecurity.

Engineering teacher Claude Charron praised students for turning compassion into action during the project’s dedication ceremony.
“We built this because no one should ever go hungry,” Charron said.

The project brought together students with different talents and skill sets, each contributing to the construction and design of the pantry. Student Leah Fulkerson said the experience showed the power of teamwork and service.
“It’s powerful and motivating to be able to make a difference for families and people who are struggling,” Fulkerson said. “I loved being able to work together on this project as a team. Each of our personal skills worked together on this project.”
To celebrate the completion of the pantry, students hosted a special ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by school and community leaders. Principal Ben Alexander congratulated students for their dedication to serving others and thanked them for using their skills to make a positive impact beyond the classroom.

Christine Aiken, president of the school’s PTSA, said the pantry represents a larger vision of community support and service.
“This is a cornerstone for what we want to do,” Aiken said. “Not only helping fellow Rockets in need, but the greater community as a whole.”
Students hope the pantry will continue to serve as both a practical resource and a symbol of compassion, reminding the community that even small acts of kindness can make a lasting difference.
