Students from Owen High School took on a special assignment - helping prepare a new permanent home for families severely impacted by Hurricane Helene.
The school’s Interact Club, a school service organization sponsored by the Rotary Club of Black Mountain and the Swannanoa Valley, joined the Rotarians for a day of service supporting the Fuller Center ROOTS Community Land Trust. Volunteers worked to prepare land that will one day be a neighborhood of up to 50 homes, a playground, and a community garden. Students cleared the area around the entrance, picked up litter, and built flower beds.
“The students did not hesitate in getting their hands dirty,” said Rotarian Andrew Mercurio. “The Rotary Club of Black Mountain and the Swannanoa Valley is extremely grateful for the resurgence of this club at Owen and teacher Rich Caisse.”
The project helps connect classroom learning with real-world impact and provides lessons in the value of community. Students and their Rotary counterparts celebrated a job well done with lunch from Good Company Pizza.
