An eighth grader at Valley Springs Middle School is reaching new heights - both creatively and competitively. Lexi McGrath recently earned second place in the intermediate category of the North Carolina Department of Aviation’s annual art contest, a statewide competition that showcases student talent and imagination.
Lexi’s artwork, inspired by this year’s theme, “Fly to Save Lives,” challenged students to explore how aviation plays a critical role in emergency response and life-saving efforts. Through her piece, Lexi captured the powerful impact of air support - from medical helicopters rushing patients to safety to rescue missions in hard-to-reach areas.
Her creativity and attention to detail set her work apart among entries from across the state. Now, Lexi’s award-winning piece is advancing to the national level, where she will compete against top student artists from across the country. If selected, she could continue on to the international stage.
Lexi’s achievement is not only a reflection of her artistic talent, but also her ability to think critically about real-world issues and bring them to life through art. Her success is a point of pride for Valley Springs Middle School and a shining example of the incredible creativity found in Buncombe County Schools.
As Lexi’s journey continues, her work serves as a reminder that even the youngest artists can make a big impact - one idea, and one drawing, at a time.
