The winning Enka Middle team poses with certificates and medals.

Congratulations to the bright young minds who put in the hard work to read 20 books for this year’s very close middle school Battle of the Books competition.

Eleven teams from Buncombe County Schools and Asheville City Schools spent months reading the titles and preparing for Monday’s competition, which was originally planned for late February but delayed because of snow days. During the competition, teams answered questions that tested their knowledge of the books. They identified titles, authors, characters, and key details from the stories. The competition featured rounds of questions that referenced books on the list, and teams had short periods of time to confer before giving their answers. Teams earned points for correct responses, with winners determined by total scores after several rounds.

The Final Standings:
🏆 First Place: Enka Middle School
🥈 Second Place: Erwin Middle School
🥉 Third Place (Tie): Koontz Intermediate School and Asheville Middle School

“It’s always impressive to see the depth of reading the students accomplish,” said Buncombe County Schools (BCS) media and blended learning specialist Lila Morel. “Reading and discussing 20 books as a team requires a lot of commitment, and the students really rise to the challenge.”

Enka Middle will now represent BCS at the Regional competition, which will take place at the Transylvania County Public Library in Brevard on March 25.

BCS thanks the Buncombe County Schools Foundation, who generously provided pizza and snacks for the students during the event. We also thank A.C. Reynolds High School students who volunteered to help run the competition. Many of them participated in Battle of the Books when they were in middle school.
