A special group of adults visited Erwin Middle School to see how students start the day fueled for school.
Members of the Carolina Hunger Initiative (CHI) and its partners took a tour of breakfast operations in both the cafeteria and the mobile “second chance” breakfast cart staffed by BCS School Nutrition team members in the hallway. CHI, which operates from the UNC Center for Health Promotion, advocates for expanding access to healthy food for people of all ages.
“Food is the most important school supply,” said BCS Nutrition Director Katy Wyatt. “I’m excited for the opportunity to share some of our innovative programs with the Carolina Hunger Initiative.”
The mobile cart is a way to serve students who may be arriving just before classes start, attended by friendly faces to greet students and help set a positive - and nutritious - tone for the day.
The tour was led by two Erwin Middle School student ambassadors, who shared information about how the breakfast program adds convenience for students, and a great start to the day.
BCS offers free breakfast and lunch to all students in every school daily.
