For nearly 22 years, the hum of engines and the clatter of tools have been the soundtrack of Brent Clements’ classroom at Enka High School. But beyond the shop bays and diagnostic scanners, Clements has built something more powerful than a rebuilt transmission - he has created a place where students know they belong.
As Enka’s Automotive Technology Instructor, Clements has spent more than two decades helping students turn curiosity into career skills, all fostering an environment grounded in respect, patience, and real-world learning. His classroom is more than a workspace: it’s a launchpad for the future in the automotive industry and beyond.

“Every student needs a place where they fit in and belong,” Clements said. “For many students, CTE (career and technical education) is that place.”
That sense of belonging is something his students feel the moment they walk through the shop doors. Whether they plan to become certified technicians, pursue engineering, or simply learn how to maintain their own vehicles, Clements meets each student where they are - with a joke, a lesson, and a steady belief in their potential.
Ross, a senior, says that’s what keeps him excited to come to class each day.
“I love coming to Mr. Clements’ class because of his humor and the real-world knowledge I am gaining,” he said.

Under Clements’ guidance, students don’t just learn how to change brakes or diagnose an engine light. They learn problem-solving, teamwork, responsibility, and pride in their work - skills that translate far beyond the garage.
Principal Katie Harris says Clements’ impact reaches every corner of Enka High.
“Brent is an exceptional educator and an even better human being who simply makes our school a better place,” she shared. “He consistently goes above and beyond to support students and colleagues, approaching every situation with patience, integrity, and care.”

During National Career and Technical Education Month, educators like Brent Clements remind us that CTE classrooms are places of purpose, opportunity, and belonging. They are spaces where hands-on learning fuels confidence and where students discover pathways to meaningful careers.
To every CTE teacher across our district - thank you for opening doors, building skills, and creating places where all students can find their fit and thrive.
