Two students talk to each other behind an Ancient Civilization display table.

¡Hola, Rey Tut! At North Buncombe Elementary School, first grade Dual Language Spanish Immersion students shared what they learned about Ancient Civilizations entirely in Spanish.

Led by teacher Jennifer Gomez Vallejos, students researched civilizations from both the Old World and the Americas, creating colorful posters and displays with support from their families. Throughout the day, students presented their work entirely in Spanish to visiting family members and other dual language classes, including kindergarten through third grade.

“Everything we teach here is in Spanish, and presenting to other classes helps students feel confident and not afraid to speak in front of others,” Gomez Vallejos said.

The experience helped students strengthen their Spanish language skills, practice public speaking, and deepen their understanding of ancient cultures through collaboration, creativity, and real-world presentation practice.

“I’ve never talked to so many people at once,” said Zoey, one of the first graders. “When you talk to people you’re not used to talking to, it actually makes you feel better after you get to meet them.”

In addition to North Buncombe Elementary, BCS offers Dual Language Spanish Immersion at Avery’s Creek, Candler, Glen Arden, Oakley, and W.D. Williams elementary schools. Find out more about BCS Dual Language Spanish Immersion.
