Students at W.D. Williams Elementary School explored themes of confidence, kindness and believing in themselves during a recent visit from children’s author Jorge Redmond.

Redmond read “Black Boy, Black Boy” and “Black Girl, Black Girl” using an interactive storytelling style that encouraged students to participate throughout the reading. Children eagerly responded to questions, repeated phrases and shared ideas as the stories emphasized self-worth and the importance of dreaming big.

The books’ messages reinforced classroom conversations about respect, equality and recognizing the potential in every student. Teachers said the visit provided an engaging way for students to reflect on how they can uplift one another and work toward a more inclusive school community.

Redmond is the co-author of the popular children’s books with Ali Kamanda. While many in Buncombe County know him through his work as a lawyer with the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office, his books focus on inspiring young readers to see themselves as leaders, creators and changemakers.

Educators at W.D. said experiences like this help students connect literature to real-world values and encourage meaningful discussions that extend beyond the classroom.
