🎓 🔧 Erwin Middle School eighth graders got a taste of life beyond the classroom during a Career Café held during lunches earlier this semester.

Organized by school counselor Stella Perrin in partnership with BCS Career Development Coordinator Sherry Peek, the event brought local businesses and organizations into the eighth-grade hall for informal, face-to-face conversations with students. Students were already reflecting on their interests in class, and the Career Café helped turn those reflections into real-world connections. Representatives from fields including hospitality, media, automotive, and community organizations shared what their jobs involve, how they prepared for their careers, and what opportunities exist locally.

“It’s educational to show kids careers,” said Tyheim, one of the students. “I like talking, and I saw a guy who works in radio, and it made me think that maybe I could talk for a living.”

Perrin said conversations like these help students see the path ahead from a young age.

“It helps them make the decisions to help them go through school with a purpose,” she said. “I want them to see that their future starts now.”
