🥏🍂 The sounds of laughter, excitement, and the occasional woody thud echoed through the trees at Richmond Hill Park, as Martin L. Nesbitt, Jr. Discovery Academy students took on the park’s disc golf course.
NDA Physical Education teacher Rene Glass brought students to the park on a cloudy day in October to cap off a unit about disc golf on a real course. They worked through the first and last few “holes” while taking in the fall scenery and bonding over the surprisingly difficult sport.
“Disc golf blends physical activity, strategy, and outdoor exploration,” Glass said. “It’s a game students can enjoy at any age, and it connects them to the outdoor spaces right here in our community.”
Students applied several skills they’ve been practicing- backhand, forehand, and putting techniques; grip, control, and accurate release; footwork and distance control; navigating varied terrain; and sportsmanship, course etiquette, and teamwork.
“We saw huge growth, not just in throwing skills, but in sportsmanship, safety, and teamwork,” Glass said. “By the end of the unit, many students were using real strategy and demonstrating throws with confidence.”
