Aspiring journalists are getting the scoop on what it takes to tell meaningful stories from where they live.
Earlier this month, students in Josh Lowe’s Honors Journalism class- The Golden Fleece Media Group- at T.C. Roberson High School welcomed Thomas Calder, Managing Editor of “Mountain Xpress.” Calder offered an inside look at the logistical operations and layout of the magazine, sharing how the publication keeps its focus on what truly shapes our daily lives- local affairs.
He emphasized the organization’s guiding philosophy that “local matters,” and the greatest opportunities for influence and action are often right here in our own community.
“We’re hungry for youth voices,” Calder explained. ”We’re grateful for his time, insight, and support of emerging storytellers in Buncombe County Schools.”
Teachers throughout BCS build relationships with industry professionals to help connect the lessons they learn to the real world and provide career exploration opportunities for students.
