Manteo Mitchell

Olympic athlete Manteo Mitchell visited Joe P. Eblen Intermediate School this month to speak with fifth-and sixth-grade students about perseverance, academic success and the importance of staying active.

Mitchell speaking to students

Mitchell, a WNC native and 2012 Olympic silver medalist, shared the story that made him known worldwide - running the final 200 meters of his relay leg in London after his fibula fractured mid-race. He explained how pushing through that moment taught him the power of resilience, focus and determination.

After recovering from his injury, Mitchell went on to reinvent himself as an athlete by transitioning from track to bobsledding, joining Team USA’s bobsled program. He told students that change, even unexpected or difficult change, can lead to new opportunities.
