🚒🔥👩‍🚒 Leicester Elementary students learned lifesaving lessons during Fire Safety Week with the help of the Leicester Fire Department (LFD).

Each grade participated in hands-on activities, from designing home escape plans to exploring the fire truck and learning about turnout gear. Kindergartners met real-life heroes and learned not to fear firefighters in full gear, while first graders used a coloring activity to practice when to call 911. Older students simulated school fire drills and studied escape route maps, learning how to “read the exits” just like they would in a store or classroom. Each grade finished up their activity with a visit to one of the department’s fire trucks.

LFD Fire and Life Safety Educator Todd Sorrells said the goal is to help kids feel confident and connected.

“This is about getting their attention and helping them feel comfortable around us,” he said. “If something bad happens, we want them to recognize us and know we’re here to help.”
