Singing students from Avery’s Creek Elementary will soon share their talents with teachers from across the state.
Organizers of the North Carolina Music Educators Association Convention have invited the school’s 4th grade Honors Choir to perform in Winston-Salem next month. While the honor is usually reserved for older students, teacher Melody McGarrahan said she submitted a video of a school performance last year that earned her students a spot on the stage.
“This is a big honor for the students and myself,” Mrs. McGarrahan shared. “I love that they are getting the experience of learning how to dream, and how to take baby steps, put it together, and get over different obstacles that might be getting in the way. By working together, they can make it happen to achieve something big.”
The choir’s trip is made possible by the support of generous sponsors, including the Little Gym of Asheville, the American Music Education Network, and Avery’s Creek parents.
“This is so cool that we get to do this,” said choir member Yaretzi, who is particularly excited to perform a blues number for the music educators. “This may be one of the first times those people will get to hear us sing.”
The special performance is Nov. 10 at the Benton Convention Center.
