Students at Woodfin Elementary School traded pencils for gardening gloves last week as the after-school garden club harvested carrots and potatoes kids planted in the spring.
With visors on and shovels in hand, children eagerly pulled up carrots and dug for potatoes before taking their bounty to the washing station.
The club, started by school volunteer Nancy Lynn Sharpless, begins each session with a short lesson and activity before students head outside to tend the beds. Last week’s focus was on root vegetables. Students colored pictures of carrots and potatoes and labeled their parts before applying the lesson in the garden.
School speech therapist Jennifer Knapp and second grade teacher Molly Rogers, who join the club each week, were on hand for the harvest.
Sharpless said the club gives students a hands-on way to learn about food and science while also experiencing the excitement of growing their own vegetables.
