Thanks to the generosity of community partners, students in Buncombe County are heading back to school with fresh haircuts and new shoes.

Cindy Ayers of Mountain Hope Incorporated organized a free back-to-school haircut event at W.D. Williams Elementary School, giving students the confidence to start the year looking and feeling their best. Hairdressers volunteered their time and talent, traveling from across the Asheville region and even as far away as Raleigh to support local families.

Ms. Ayers, a former teacher, said her passion for education and the Swannanoa community inspired her to give back.

“I know how important it is for children to feel ready and confident when they walk into school,” she said.

In addition to haircuts, Ms. Ayers partnered with local businesses and organizations to expand the support. One store in particular, Journey’s Shoes at the Tanger Outlets, joined the effort by donating new shoes for students at Charles D. Owen Middle School, ensuring more children start the year prepared from head to toe.

Families, teachers, and students alike expressed deep gratitude for the service.

“This is more than just a haircut,” one parent said. “It’s a fresh start for our kids.”

Buncombe County Schools extends a heartfelt thank you to Cindy Ayers and all the volunteers who made this possible. Your generosity has brightened the first day of school for countless students.
