A rising senior at Enka High School is helping to make a difference for students across the state. Isabella Geier has been appointed to the North Carolina Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SSAC), composed of a dozen high school students from the mountains to the sea.

“We meet with North Carolina Superintendent Mo Green, typically on Zoom, to advise him on problems and solutions within North Carolina Public Schools,” said Isabella. “These problems can be anything from teacher recruitment to school safety, student mental health, and career readiness. The SSAC will also create a presentation on a specific problem that we, as students, have a direct experience with, and deem important to the welfare of the public schools. This presentation will be presented in August in Raleigh to the superintendent and the North Carolina Board of Education, with the opportunity to present legislation to the State General Assembly.”

Isabella is interested in one day pursuing a career in political science or international relations. When school counselor Lois Peterson told her about the opportunity to serve on the SSAC, she eagerly applied.

“About 1,800 students applied, so I consider it a great privilege to be selected and not only represent the Enka District, but all of Buncombe County Schools,” Isabella shared. “I'm still working to figure out my place on the council and how I can contribute to the discussion in mind of the greatest benefit for students across the state. I hope to bring greater attention to the arts and grant a greater sense of equity for all students.”

Thank you, Isabella, for your leadership!
