T.C. Roberson High School made North Carolina high school baseball history, as the Rams earned a third consecutive 4A North Carolina baseball championship Saturday afternoon in Burlington.
“This is something you’ll always remember,” said head coach Eric Filipek, addressing his seniors as the team celebrated on the field. “You’ll talk about years from now when you’re together at your weddings. You’ll talk about it over campfires. You’ve done something that’s never been done before. Underclassmen, this team has given you the blueprint to keep this going.”
Roberson clinched the best-of-three series against Laney High of Wilmington with a hard-fought 8-7 victory in game two. Friday night’s game one ended with a 12-0 win for the Rams, which was cut short by the state athletic association’s “mercy rule.”
Seniors Micah Simpson and Caden Davidson were named co-MVP’s.
“What a story,” Caden shared. “Micah was MVP the first year we won, and then it was me last year. You couldn’t write this. All of my teammates, we had each other’s backs. There’s not one who hasn’t bought into this baseball program and given their all.”
Micah was on the mound for the final pitch of the series, and of his storied high school career.
“When you look at three seasons of playoffs and championships, we have played the maximum number of days possible together,” said Micah. “The moments I’m going to remember are being with the team, and all the heart we have in everything we do on and off the field. To have this experience and these memories to look back on in life is truly special.”
