A T.C. Roberson student proved he’s got culinary chops. Senior Nathan Tucker earned first place in the SkillsUSA State Culinary Competition last week at Carteret Community College.
The event itself is a bit of a pressure cooker. As he competed against 14 other students, Nathan was given four hours to create a meal, including a soup, an entree with two sides, and a custard for dessert. The work included cutting, boning, and portioning a whole chicken. Much like the show “Iron Chef,” students had nine ingredients they were required to incorporate into their meal.
Nathan came to the competition with refined culinary skills learned during two internships through T.C. Roberson’s Career and Technical Education program - at Blackbird Restaurant and Ukiah Japanese Smokehouse.
He will now go on to compete at the SkillsUSA national competition this June in Atlanta.
