The Oakley Elementary media center buzzed with excitement as students settled onto the carpeted floor, their eyes fixed on the guest of honor - children’s book author Jorge Redmond. Redmond stood at the front of the room, holding a copy of his newest book, “Black Girl, Black Girl,” its vibrant cover gleaming under the library lights.
He opened the book and began reading, his voice filling the room with rhythm and warmth. The students listened in wide-eyed wonder, giggling at the playful moments and nodding along as the main character discovered her own beauty and strength.
As each grade took turns visiting the media center, the conversations grew deeper. Second and third graders marveled at the illustrations, pointing out their favorite details. Fourth graders asked about the writing process, while fifth graders wondered more about the influential characters in the book.
Each child received a signed bookmark from Mr. Redmond as a reminder to keep dreaming and to keep reading. As Mr. Redmond walked out of Oakley Elementary, he knew he had left behind something more than just a book - he left behind inspiration.
