A student from Charlotte made it her mission to make a difference for students in Buncombe County.
Friday, Akili McKee, an 8th grader from Piedmont IB Middle School, traveled with her parents to Buncombe County Schools Central Services with bins of books she collected for students here.
“I think reading is really important,” shared Akili. “I know there are families who lost everything in the hurricane, including their books, and I wanted to do something to help them.”
Akili made posters to advertise her plan, and had donors select titles from an Amazon wish list she created. When she’d collected her books, she asked her parents to drive her to Asheville and presented her collection to BCS Associate Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Reed and Debbie DeVane of BCS Student Services.
“I felt so happy to be there and take pictures and give hugs,” said Akili. “It felt so special to make this delivery.”
Thank you, Akili, for your amazing gift!
