A Buncombe County Schools teacher has earned a prestigious national award.
Leigha Jordan of Valley Springs Middle School has received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). The PAEMST awards program is administered by the National Science Foundation on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. It recognizes outstanding teachers for their contributions to the teaching and learning of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Ms. Jordan is this year’s North Carolina honoree for math.
“I feel honored to represent Valley Springs Middle School, the Roberson District, Buncombe County Schools, and the state of North Carolina,” Ms. Jordan shared. “This award really celebrates my students, because it represents the hard work they put forth everyday. It also represents my colleagues, who I learn from and grow with at BCS.”
After being nominated by BCS Instructional Coach Stefanie Hill, Ms. Jordan embarked on a lengthy, detailed process of sharing her teaching with the National Science Foundation through recorded observations and essays.
She’ll receive a $10,000 award and be honored at a ceremony in Washington, DC later this year. Congratulations!
