glass blown ornament

Students at Johnston Elementary recently experienced the magic of glassblowing right in their own backyard. Thanks to Jackson County Green Energy Park, a mobile glass blowing demonstration brought art to life for these young learners.

Gene heating up the glass

Gene, the talented glass artist, captivated students as she carefully selected colorful glass beads, heated them, and skillfully shaped them into a dazzling Christmas ornament. Watching her blow into the rod to form a bubble and then craft the glass into intricate shapes left students wide-eyed with amazement. When she invited the crowd to suggest her next creation, the children eagerly shouted ideas, and one clear request led to a charming little Christmas tree. The cheers continued as she crafted a delicate glass flower.

Principal Angie Trantham shared that this project was originally intended to introduce students to glass art ahead of their planned visit to the Biltmore’s Chihuly exhibition, a trip unfortunately canceled due to Hurricane Helene. However, the mobile demonstration proved to be an inspiring alternative.

Now, the students are taking their newfound enthusiasm for art into their own hands. Using recycled water bottles from the recent boil water advisory, they will construct a collaborative art piece to adorn the school’s entryway—a creative and meaningful tribute to their glassblowing experience.
