A good-natured war of words erupted among students, at the Buncombe County Schools Battle of the Books.
The district competition brought teams from 26 elementary, middle, and intermediate schools to show off their knowledge based on a competition reading list of 20 works.
“Students loved reading the various genres of books in the competition and readily share their favorite books or authors,” said Digital and Blended Learning Director Janet Frazier. “The day of the competition, we see nerves and smiles from students and coaches alike. They get excited to come together from across the district and answer questions in rounds to see which team can garner the most points.”
Team members enjoyed the competition environment.
“There’s so much I loved about this,” shared Heidi Hernandez, a sixth grader at North Windy Ridge Intermediate. “You get to read, meet new people, and show how fast you are at trivia. We’ve had mock battles to help get us ready.”
In addition to the teachers who coached each team, the Battle of the Books required a lot of other adults, who were excited for the chance to help.
“There are scores of volunteers who participated in reading questions, tallying points, manning a timer, judging, and other tasks to pull this off,” added Frazier. “It was so much fun to see students get excited about books.”
