Our WD Teacher of the Year: Mrs. Catharine Laufer! Mrs. Laufer is a fantastic first grade teacher that creates a safe and caring learning environment for all her students. She also mentors two of our new teachers as they learn their new curriculum and grade level expectations. We are so thankful for her leadership at WD! She helps to make #WDtheplacetobe!

Please use the link below to read the 2023 North Carolina School Report Cards. https://bit.ly/3hriYBh "The NC School Report Cards website contains snapshots of information about our schools, including the school performance grade, students’ academic growth, how prepared our students are when they enter a school, and a number of other measures as well," said NC Superintendent Catherine Truitt. "These resources are readily available for you and allow transparency into aspects like spending as well as school performance. Although this information is important to know, we know it doesn’t tell the complete story. It doesn’t show the hard work our educators pour in each day for their students and schools and it doesn’t show the spirit of the school itself. No data will be able to show the dedication of our educators nor will it show the extracurricular opportunities, the athletic programs, the apprenticeship, or career preparatory classes - all of which have a profound impact on students and growth."

Our K-Kids were busy visiting classrooms last week to get the word out about our Food Drive and Mitten Tree Collection. K-Kids (Kiwanis Kids) are students from our 4th and 5th grade whose mission is to make a positive difference in the world and the lives of others. From Tuesday, November 28th - Tuesday, December 12th they will be collecting food to support members of our own Owen community. If you would like to help, we are collecting foods that will not spoil easily and are not in glass containers. Foods like cereal, granola bars, soup, beans, rice, spaghetti noodles, spaghetti sauce, crackers, and oatmeal would be great! Also, they are collecting new winter hats, gloves, and scarves for our Mitten Tree by the main office. These items will be shared after the drive with any of our students that may need them. If you would like to donate, please bring in your donations to the main office or send them in with your student, no later than Tuesday, December 12th. K-Kids will be visiting classrooms to pick-up any donations through the 12th. Thank you in advance for helping to make our community a better place! 🐎
