Buncombe County Schools (BCS) employs thousands of extraordinary staff across the district. BCS takes pride in recruiting the best in order to inspire, educate, encourage, and elevate students on a daily basis. As a way to honor the hard work and dedication that staff pour into our school community, we are recognizing those who go above and beyond to make BCS the best. This BCS Staff Spotlight recognizes elementary teacher Julia Doran of Buncombe County Schools Virtual Academy (BCSVA).

In the virtual classroom, Ms. Doran radiates a kaleidoscope of enthusiasm with lively lessons that make learning an exhilarating adventure for kindergarten, first, and second grade.

“I love being able to teach multi-age classes and connect students who are choosing an education that works for them,” said Ms. Doran. “I also love having more opportunities to work one on one with students and build a lasting relationship.”

BCSVA serves families who want a homeschool environment for their child(ren). The school caters to a tapestry of student needs, all while providing a dynamic educational environment that appeals to a variety of families from grade kindergarten to 12th grade.

“At BCSVA, a parent is making the commitment to work alongside the teacher and their child to assure the best education experience possible,” Ms. Doran explained. “We offer a lot of great opportunities for students to connect with each other in person, and build relationships with other students.”

Ms. Doran plays an essential role at BCSVA and strives for the highest standards for her students.

“She is a vital steward in building our kindergarten through second grade blended teaching and learning,” said Principal Gina Toomey. “Her traditional and non-traditional life teaching experiences have been crucial to the design and building of our school.”

Students and families can feel the impact that Ms. Doran has on them and the broad knowledge she is instilling in the young learners.

“This school is awesome,” said first grader Anna. “I love Ms. Doran. She is nice and kind. Everyone should be in her class.”

“There have been so many very special moments where with her gentle words she has warmed our hearts and encouraged our souls,” said a BCSVA parent.
