An Early College student presents information about one of North Carolina's four-year institutions

🫶🏻✨🎓🏫👨🏽‍🎓Last week, Buncombe County Early College (BCEC) students took “tours” of the many North Carolina universities that accept their A-B Tech college credits.

Teams of older students designed posters that provided interesting and important details about the four-year schools, like application processes, acceptance rates, cost, return on investment, campus culture, and more. They collaborated with and presented their research to younger students during the school’s CORE (Connect, Orient, Reflect, Empower) Time, reflecting together on their next steps after high school.

“It helps us see the options and future possibilities more clearly,” said third year student Diana. “That’s kind of what this school is all about.”

Thanks to BCEC’s dual enrollment program at AB Tech, many students are first-generation college degree seekers, said English teacher Anneliese Shreve. Teachers at BCEC help kids learn how to think about and explore college opportunities.

“We believe that college is possible for all of our students, so events like this help them to start to envision what a four-year college experience might be like,” she said. College exploration events help kids to become excited about their futures and strengthen their focus so that they can achieve their goals. One of our main values and mission at BCEC is changing students’ possibilities. Part of that process is helping kids explore all the amazing colleges that could be possibilities for them.”
