Emma Elementary School’s Project Learning Garden, the first of its kind in North Carolina, is growing minds along with nutritious food.

The project, sponsored by Dole Packaged Foods, the Captain Planet Foundation and Ingles Markets, added informative signs and garden-based activities to the school’s community garden and provided a food cart with tools for preparing fresh meals using garden vegetables.

“We’ve got a really involved community at Emma, which helps us leverage the garden to the next level, letting the kids see their food in the garden and also on the table in front of them,” said Emma Elementary School principal Jeremy Stowe.

Emma kindergarteners got to pick tomatoes and lettuce and meet Captain Planet during a dedication ceremony in front of the garden on Wednesday. With adult help, they mixed a salad dressing, washed the veggies and munched on the resulting salad.

“We’re very excited for the opportunity to connect this garden with the finished product,” Stowe said. “Our kids will get to watch the garden grow, see the result, and also get see how it tastes.”

Learning Gardens are outdoor laboratories that provide a context for hands-on learning in all subjects, including nutrition, science, social studies, math, history, and language arts, according to the Captain Planet Foundation.
